THE PHONE NUMBER

When I reached page 120 of the book, a handwritten mobile phone number was seen. I was confused at first but then the realization hits me. The numbers on the paper evoked a sense of familiarity within me. I racked my brain trying to figure out whose phone number it was, until.

My father. Thoughts rushed my mind: is this really him, and if so, why is his phone number here? But I suppose there was only one way to find out. I reluctantly took out my phone. I was scared, scared that it would actually be my father on the other end of the line. I unwillingly started to dial the number. The call button was staring at me, and I was staring right back. I mustered the bravery to finally call the number.

I was welcomed by a gentle, sweet, feminine voice that stood in a stark contrast to father’s voice. Apologizing, I mentioned that I might have dialed the wrong number. However, the woman on the other end interrupted me and said, “You must be Amelia, Carl’s daughter,” Her tone carried such warmth that it made me cherish my name as it gracefully rolled off her gentle lips.

Hearing the name Carl felt so familiar and yet so distant. As I was lost in thought, the sweet lady’s gentle voice interrupted me, calling out for Carl to come and talk to me.

The familiar voice mumbled, but it immediately revealed itself to be none other than my father’s.

“Hi.”
