The Last Hunger Games

“It was only seconds before the new year. And, just then-” we heard a loud banging sound on the door. Timing is incredible, said Amy while going downstairs to open the door. The timing was really great because we were in the middle of a horror story session. So the littlest sound made us jump from our places. It may seem weird, to tell horror stories on New Year’s Eve, rather than Halloween. But it’s been our tradition for the five of us for years. We have been friends since we were kids. We are like a family. It was Katie at the door, waiting patiently with snacks in her hand. Finally, you are here, I said, the group was complete and we could start the game.

Everyone was full of excitement for this year’s hunger games. For 15 years it was held in this exact mansion, on this exact day. The rules were simple; you tried to eliminate everyone with a nerf gun while trying to collect all the Santa figures. When you eliminate someone you could have their Santa figures too and with enough Santa you could buy booby traps. Last person standing wins. It is not the most logical game but we’ve come up with it when we were 7, so no complaints. The mansion was gigantic, you could scream all you want but from across the mansion and no one would hear a sound. When everyone was in the living room we drew lots to determine who was going to get which gun. All of my friends looked competitive and ready so the 15th hunger could begin. With a little twist, no one knew but me!

When everybody hid it was time to go. I got out of my hiding place, which was in the library this year. The dim light surrounding me made the atmosphere even more thrilling. I didn’t care about the Santa figures I had only one goal. 6 months ago I heard my grandpa, also the owner of this mansion didn’t leave me this mansion in his will. He left it to Amy and all his assets were shared between the five of us. I couldn’t understand why and thought it was unfair. After all I as his grandchildren no them, they didn’t deserve it. After I learned that I would have to share my own grandpa’s heritage with others I decided to get rid of them.

My first target was Amy and I knew exactly where she hid, it was the same every year. I went out to the garden filled with ravishing white roses. With an axe in my hand, I approached her from behind while she was digging for the Santa figure. And I slashed her head with my axe. Her blood splattered onto the white roses painting them red with elegance. Three to go I said to myself.

My next stop was the kitchen, I saw Katie from the security cameras. On my way to the kitchen, I heard a “shh” sound coming from my left. It was Isabella. She came up to me and said “ I know you’re good at this game, do you want to be my ally so we can hunt everyone and win easily? I even have a booby trap we could try.” Her offer was ridiculous but as I opened my mouth to speak she noticed the bloody axe in my hand. I smiled sweetly and then chopped her head off without giving her time to run. As I watched her fall to the ground I didn’t feel a single emotion. I wondered how did I become like this. Anyways, I was not done.

When I arrived at the kitchen I saw Katie and Sarah together making plans on how to defeat us. They saw me coming with a maniac smile and got up quickly. They looked confused about the situation because I didn’t have a nerf in my hand. Instead, I had an axe. After a second the panic in their eyes told me it was time. So I decided to have some fun and grabbed two knives. I threw the knives at them from across the counter. The knives found their target immediately, one to the head and the other one to the heart. The sound of blood dripping from my axe echoed once everywhere was silent. Finally, it was over. I turned around and took a deep breath. And appreciated my blood-soaked mansion.
