Based on the complicated love story of two unfortunate lovers, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, The Great Gatsby is an Oscar winning film by Baz Luhrmann. The main character, Jay Gatsby, is played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and that is one of the first reasons why I watched this film.
The story is a heartbreaking love story with greed and violence with an unexpected ending to it. Jay and Daisy are former lovers who were separated because of the war. Although Daisy waited years for Jay to come back, he never did so she married to another man. Gatsby is a self-made millionaire who throws sumptuous parties with the hope that Daisy would attend to one of them. The lovers are reunited with the help of Daisies’ cousin Nick however things are not the same…
The actors and actresses who played the characters made an excellent job at displaying the emotions and characteristics of their characters .Also the cinematography was at its finest and it is what fascinated me the most. I have always admired Baz Luhrmanns’ work and I can say, for myself, that The Great Gatsby was one of his best Works. However I believe some parts of the film where the characters had deeper conversations were not long enough for me to feel them, but how fast moving the film was and the scenery combined with touching sound tracks covered it up.
The message it was trying to give was also what drawn me to the movie more. My observations were that it displayed trying to achieve the unrealistic American dream and stated that you cannot repeat the past perfectly.
Overall my rating for the movie would be 8/10 given that it was not perfect to me but it was nearly perfect.
