It was finally the end of another long and tiring year. He got off of work and headed towards his house over the pawn shop. His job wasn’t one that paid well but he and his family managed to live.
He was thinking about his family and what he was going to get presents for them. His beautiful wife had been hurting her hand while sewing so he wanted to buy her a sewing machine. His curious little son wanted to learn more about everything so he wanted to buy him an encyclopedia. His daring little daughter had read all of the books that she had so he wanted to buy him more books. As these thoughts flowed in his head he also realized that he didn’t have the money to buy any of these things. “Time is money, they say. I wish I could sell my time.” he thought, saddened by the fact that he had no money. He checked his wallet and found out that it was empty. He looked at his watch and saw the time was 6:43pm. He still had an hour until dinner so he sat down on the closest bench he could find and started thinking. He could not think of a way to get him enough money until it was new year. Disappointed, he got up and sadly walked towards his house.
He arrived home to the smell of a freshly baked pie. He could not believe it as he hadn’t eaten a pie in years. They just could not afford one. He went to the kitchen and opened the door. His wife had the biggest grin on her face when she saw him. Her eyes were wide with joy. She looked at him for a moment and then said, ” I have a surprise for you honey!” He smiled back He smiled back. He did not know what to say but knew that this was already a miraculous night for him. He went into the living room to see his children playing with the pieces of rubble they brought back home from the construction site nearby. He wanted to tell them not to play with those dirty rocks but when he saw how happy they were he just sat down and watched them play. “Children, honey go wash your hands I am bringing the pie.” she cried. The children got up and raced each other to the sink. As they sat down on the carpet they smiled at each other. The house was cold but they felt warmer than ever.
Time was going by and they were getting closer and closer to the end of the year. It was minutes before the new year. And just then he had a realization. “Time is money!” he thought as he quickly got up. He rushed downstairs to the pawn shop. When he came back he had a sewing machine, 2 books, an encyclopedia and a tanline of a watch on his arm.
