“Your final decision?” I felt the tip of my tongue vibrate. It was really a surreal experience. To my left was a man named “Jason”. He was actually an Arab but loved American names. If you saw the guy 10 metres away you would say he was an average American. He was a buff guy with long hair and goatee. A tax paying citizen would be how you describe him until you got closer. When you looked in his eyes. You could see the fire in him to take anything and everything he could. “Alex, I need you to decide now. It is simple really. Either you come with me to the coldest place on earth and live through the monstrous conditions. Then you will receive a big sum of money or you could stay here. Living the rest of your life in misery.”
The flight to Antarctica was surprisingly relaxing. For quite a while I felt like I was going to land in Hawaii soon. Unfortunately this thought was gone after I saw massive mountains and camps. The moment we landed I realised it was on. This was an opportunity of a lifetime. Carry out basic research and then receive a big payment. The hardest part though was the fact that the previous team couldn’t make it back alive. Which worried me quite a lot but for the money it was going to be worth it. 12 days had passed by like a second. I had finally gotten used to the conditions. Until one day my captain made a questionable request. He wanted me to gather some materials from the bottom of a mountain which the locals called “black death”. I instantly refused but knew that he wouldn’t take no as an answer. I put on my gear, took a deep breath and started running. It was going to be a long night.
I was almost finished when I heard a rather strange voice. It sounded like someone was trying to breathe but couldn’t succeed. I tried to understand where the voice was coming from but had no luck. “Hello, is anyone there?” I couldn’t hear a response. I started to think of my kids and how happy they would be when I returned home. Instantly my eyes went black. I couldn’t feel my body. I had no idea what was happening. I couldn’t move my hands nor my feet. “Alex, are you there?” I moved my mouth but the words just wouldn’t come out. “Alex please respond. Are you here?” “I don’t think he is here, Jason.” I tried to scream but not one letter would come out. I heard their footsteps go away one by one.
