The year is 2030. Our country is still going strong but it has fallen in my eyes. The government has adopted a totalitarian regime. The public is heavily oppressed by the government. People are not free to criticize, let alone talk about the government unless they are praising it. All forms of media are in control. Every TV channel, every newspaper publisher, every printing office…
The streets are also filled with trigger-happy police officers, waiting for a reason to shoot. One wrong move and you kick the bucket. These police officers are there to monitor the people in case they say things that the government does not want to hear. All mediums of communication are limited. You can only call someone only in specific hours of the day. All phone calls are being listened to. All forms of social media are banned. You can only use the ones that the government makes because heavily regulated. You can only use the app that is made by the government to text someone. That one is also very heavily regulated.
There is a huge scarcity of books. The government burns the ones that it does not like. People have to find ways around the system to read books. One very popular method is switching the spines of the books. So that you can still have that book without it getting taken away from you.
Because of the oppression, people can not have fun. That’s why depression levels are at an all-time high. Kids spend most of their time at school and parents have to work long hours to feed their families. People who can not work are usually terminated because they do not benefit the government. Marriage rates are very low. Suicide rates are also through the roof.
How did this all happen? Well, let me explain. It all started with the 2023 elections. The political party that was already in power won again and they stated that they will be making heavy changes in how people live, to make the country better. The people were furious. The government had to back down for a bit and everything was calm for a bit. The government knew that if they actually wanted to make the changes that they wanted, they would need to use some force.
Some people protested this move, but to no avail. The public was not organized enough to have an effect. People slowly started to get used to the system when they realized that there was nothing they could do. Most people are trying to leave the country but they limited that too. The main reason people have for leaving the country is education but most leave and never come back. They would rather work at a gas station in Europe, than be rich in this country.
Close to the end of 2027, they made some new changes. Everything was much more strict now. You would think that people would be even more infuriated but no! Everyone was mostly calm. It was almost like people were used to living in bad conditions and being oppressed. The number of people who supports the current president was increasing by the day. It was almost like they were being brainwashed. The ones that were against the government were actively being silenced to the point where all forms of media were being monitored and the people did not seem to realize that there was something wrong.
As expected, the same political party won the elections again in 2028. There is no competition at this point. When all the people that are against this party are out of the country, only the ignorant people are left, you can not expect anything different.
It is almost like Big Brother is here.
