Effects of climate change is increasing day by day. We don’t know what the future holds, yet we know that we can stop it with our actions. Of course this is not something we can end in a day but with a little effort we can reduce the effects and leave a better world for next generations. Easiest way to do that is reducing our carbon footprints.
First of all, “What is a carbon footprint?” Carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that come from the production, use and end-of-life of a product or service. Carbon dioxide — the gas that ordinarily produced by people — and others, including methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases, which trap heat in the environment, causing a dangerous atmospheric devation. Usually, the main part of a person’s carbon impression will come from transportation and food. To put it simply, we can say that it means the carbon dioxide and the harmful substances we produce in our daily activities. Since it is produced from our daily activities, you may not have noticed that you are actually harming the environment but fret not, you can change it.
If you want to reduce your carbon footprint you can start by thinking how much you travel. Rather than travelling by car you can consider biking or walking. If your work place is close, biking or walking there would be pretty efficient. We can call it killing two birds with one stone because if you bike or walk not only you will reduce carbon dioxide you release but also it will help you to keep in shape. You can also try flying less. If it is a must for you, you can donate money to sustainable projects.
Learning “5 R’s” would be a great help in your less carbon releasing journey. You’ve probably heard of the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. But there are two more that are equally important as well. “Refuse” stands for avoiding single use plastics, paper products and prefering reusables. For instance, you can get a water bottle and thanks to that you won’t be needing the single use plastic bottles. “Reduce” means being more mindful of your needs and downsizing purchases. Starting a shopping list would be pretty effective so that you will not get distracted by other things in the market. “Reuse” is trying to find a way to keep an item last longer or repairing when it breaks. “Rot” means setting up a compost system. Last but not least we have “Recycle” which is properly recycling any metarial which comes into your life.
To sum up, you can start with these steps which are pretty simple and effective. Just by doing these you will decrease huge amout of carbon dioxide you produce and we will be closer to the better word we desire.
