Self-Knowledge

We humans are different creatures from other creatures on this earth. The biggest reason that I think this way is we have our emotions, thoughts and feelings. And we can reflect our feelings on our behaviors. At the same time, the fact that each person’s feelings and thoughts operate different is one of the reasons that makes us special. We have such an outlook in th eyes of the World. What about our eyes? How do we see our own selves?

How did peoples placed their selves in their own worlds. How we see ourselves is of course very important. It is not really possible to get to understand peoples without knowing ourselves. If we give an example we can said Michel de Montaigne. Montaigne is a writer who stands above self-knowledge. We can see this in his books easily. But at the same time, Montaigne has given us a word on the way to self-knowledge.

‘Underplaying yourself is not humility but foolishness’

In short Michel de Montaigne says that it is not right despise ourselves from the status we are in and to look down to ourselves. The other meaning that I get from this sentence is it is that we do not try to change ourself because we should not look down on ourselves.

At the same time Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî, who advises :

‘Discard yourself and thereby regain yourself. Spread the trap of humility and ensnare love.’

To be honest I try so much to understand this sentence. But as I understand it says we must look ourself and transform it into a new self. In other say he wants us to manipulate love by transforming the self we dislike to we like. ( I hope I understand correctly)

In this point there is a few differences between Michel de Montaigne and Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî. Montaigne believes that humility is not is to underplaying yourself, Mevlana thinks the opposite.

If I have not misunderstood I agree with Michel de Montaigne’s thoughts. Because we have learn to see and find our own personality as it is.
