Food resources in many countries might not be sufficient enough to feed their own citizens. This could be seen as the result of conflict, poverty, economic shocks such as hyperinflation and rising commodity prices, and environmental shocks such as flooding or drought. This situation actively demonstrates that the country would try and get their needed sources from outside, bringing the country to a dependent position.
Thus situated, genetically modifying crops could be treated as it is the only solution to the rising threat of severe famine and starvation. With its advantages, it also brings disadvantages as expected.
In view of the fact that crops are modified, they often have more nutrients with fewer pesticides while costing less and with a prolonged shelf life. They also come with more desirable traits, such as potatoes producing a less cancer-causing substance when they are fried.
Increasing the number of crops produced in shorter periods of time is a rational decision, on the contrary, there are some expressed concerns about genetically modified organisms may have negative health effects.
Allergic or toxic reactions to genetically modified organisms are unexpectedly common, while people consume this modified organism, their DNA could get easily affected by that. Also, the inadvertent transfer of genes from one genetically modified plant or animal to another plant or animal not intended for genetic modification would cause a bigger problem without finding a solution for the initial problem.
Alternatives to genetically modifying already naturally enhanced organisms, the soil quality should be improved through plants and minerals, adding, building, and preserving humus in the soil, eliminating compaction, and regulating an efficient pH value will give more enduring results than taking risks for easier “solutions”.
To sum up, everything I have stated so far, I stand by getting healthier and more guaranteed results by putting in a little bit more effort. Providing a risky and temporary solution should not be called a solution for the stated obstacle.
