Nothing Like Home

Today was a new day in our new challenging life, which started with the change of the president of the country. I woke up as usual to go to work selling coffee to people who didn’t like me. A year ago, my only goal was to finish my last year of university because I thought that when I finished, I would work in a good job and with a good salary as a return for my 6 years of work. But it didn’t turn out the way I thought, because in last year’s presidential election, the man who would destroy our country was elected and it became difficult for me to get a job. Not only that, but as the economy got worse, my family went into debt and I started working in a minimum wage cafe.

Just as I was heading to work, I received a happy phone call from my mother. She was telling me that I should come home. I ran home and I saw my mother in the garden of our house and  my mother told me Pelin can you look quietly and slowly at the ground? Am I mistaken or is there a golden bracelet right under my foot? My mother looked at me conflicted and asked if we should take it. If she had asked me this question before, I would have been angry with her and of course told her not to take it, but now the situation had changed and I could not stand being in this country anymore. And even though I knew it was wrong, I told her to take it. I sat my mother on the chair and told her that this country was no longer livable. I explained that we needed to leave this country and that we could sell our house and build a different, better life abroad.

However, my mother told me that no matter how bad our country is at the moment, our country is our home, but I was right that there would be no future here. That’s why she gave me the golden bracelet and bought a single plane ticket. When we got to the airport, she told me that he wanted me to go and get a good job, but eventually come back to my country because there is no place like your own home.
