New Year Mystery

When I woke up in the morning it was dark everywhere. I tried to stand up, but in vain, I was very tired. My feet couldn’t listen to me and my eyes couldn’t focus. I tried to try a little harder but the result was the same, I was just too tired to get up or do anything. As I was trying to get up from where I was laying on, a phone suddenly rang. It was my boss calling, asking where I was.

My boss is normally a calm, smiling and kind hearted person. At least that’s how he tries to look. I came to myself after hearing my boss’s voice. I remembered that we had a very big celebration last night and a smile formed on my face. The whole team had just received an e-mail announcing the success of our project, so they all came over to my house to celebrate. The woman I fell in love with, Julia, also came to the celebration. This was a big thing for me. It’s easy for me to flirt with her since we work in the same place. Since we’re alone from time to time and have access to each other’s social media accounts—which allows us to get inside each other’s heads—it’s easy for me to say that she enjoys this flirting and wants to further it. I can’t forget that smile at the party and all the things we did. I wouldn’t be lying if I said it was the best night of my life. While these beautiful memories were running through my head, I thought of the conversation we had with my boss, and I got up with great excitement, got dressed and ran straight to my car. My car was covered in snow and there was not the slightest possibility of getting inside. Seeing the snow reminded me how close the new year is. The new year was tonight. I couldn’t wait for the bus to come. While I waited, I saw Julia sitting there looking at me with her naive smile. She walked over to me and greeted me with the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen in my life. We boarded the bus together, and when I checked the clock, all that smile was gone because it was 11 pm. Why had my boss called me and why was Julia going to work? Too many questions popped up in my head. Julia noticed this as well and told me to calm down; she had just heard from our boss that he wanted to surprise us.

When we got to the office, everything was dark. After walking a little more, we reached our boss’s room. Entering the room, all the lights were turned on and confetti spilled into the air. It was a celebration, our boss wanted to throw us a surprise party. We had a lot of fun at the party and at 11:56 we left the office to go home. After I left the office, I went to invite Julia to my house. I was going to tell him that I like him and that I want to be with him. I was saving this moment for  Christmas. Only seconds left until the new year. And just then I heard the sound of a car braking behind me and I fell to the ground in great pain. As my eyes closed, I saw Julia, who was full of tears and rushing towards me. He was saying my name. This made me happy…
