Menace

I was sitting on a pile of cash when I heard a strong knock on the door. Two possibilities were awaiting me. Either it could be the cops who found a lead and discovered our hideout. Or it could be Jake with my men who were supposed to meet me elsewhere. I looked at the ceiling, water was leaking from it. Upstairs was a bathtub where the gang before us stored corpses. I took a deep breath. I repeated my life philosophy “life is about risk”. I took fast but careful steps to not make noise. A picture of my dad appeared to me. He was a fierce but silent guy. With no thought I opened the door. My hands started shaking uncontrollably. It was “Hector.”

“I didn’t know you were coming, boss.” Code named black death, the man was the devil himself.  He looked like he could bend metal. Being one of the most powerful men in the city, to whom even amongst the country the man smiled every second. Behind that smile I could see a thousand death orders. “I thought you would like a little surprise?” “Sir…” I couldn’t bring the rest of my words. Why would the big boss come to me? Even more surprising is the fact that he came alone. All of this made no sense. In a blink he pulled out his wallet. Grabbed a check. “Say your name again.” “Jesse, sir.” “Alright, Jesse. You are the man for the job. Out of all the people I asked there wasn’t a single bad comment about you. They say you like to take risks. This is going to be a big one. I am going to have you to…” He took a pause. He looked like he was trying to select the exact words. But then he gave up. “ You are going to assassinate the Pope.” I thought he was joking, he wasn’t. “I already bought your tickets. You are going to Vatican city.” I tried to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I wished I was. I think he understood what I was going to say. Before giving me a chance to speak he started whispering in an amused but threatening tone. “By the way, you have no choice. I have locations of Dear Sandra and your two sisters. If you do succeed I am willing to spoil you a little. You will be receiving 100 thousand cash. A big price one would agree.”

Small amount of time was left. I don’t remember ever being this nervous. Out of all the people I could murder it was going to be the Pope himself. The plan was to do the job when the Pope was with her daughter. The boss had figured out that the Pope had a daughter from an unofficial marriage. Basically I was going to murder her father while she saw it with her own eyes. Looked at my watch, 2 minutes left. I had a reminiscence of the past. What a horrible life I had. I was beaten up by my father from the very moment I opened my eyes. I never succeeded in anything. Never loved someone. The only person who ever had a bit of love for me was my mom. We haven’t spoken for 3 years. It was time. I headed to the given location. He entered the tiny apartment. I did as well. It was showtime. “Don’t… don’t budge an inch!” He looked at me as if he knew this was his fate. Before I could say anything I stopped breathing. I tried so hard but no. My body couldn’t function properly. A loud noise hit my ears. I sat down. I whispered to myself “ life is about risks.”  I gasped but no help. Heart attack. I blinked for the last time in my life. I shouldn’t have taken that many risks.
