Laws in the 21st Century

Laws are essential in keeping order in society. Their importance becomes ever more evident as years pass and the potential and ability of people with ill-intentions to commit unthinkably heinous crimes increase rapidly due to technological breakthroughs. Of course, such advancements also serve as a tool to eradicate crime and disorder. Unfortunately, our legal systems fall helplessly behind in the race that is adapting to technology, while evildoers seem to have no problem fully embracing whatever new technology is thrown at them to commit their acts of hate and villainy.

We have a very traditional way of viewing law. We have not yet had any notable reforms in regard to preventing iniquity online, despite it being an excellent environment for unethical and objectively concerning behaviour. This presents a huge risk for everyone, and things will get worse and worse as our lives become more and more dependent on the virtual world unless we change things and take serious precautions to prevent harmful acts online. We should change our laws at least partially to be more mindful about virtual crimes.

We live in a point in human history where almost everything we do is recorded and digital footprints are a very real threat for many people. With the advancements in AI technology, all the data present about us can easily be replicated or changed. It is as easy as pushing a button to create false information about individuals and use it to ruin their reputation and cause them tremendous harm not only online but also in their personal lives. Unless we act quickly, such cases will get out of hand and very soon we will all live in fear of being framed for things we haven’t done. It is crucial that we enforce rules about the use of AI before it is too late.

In conclusion, I think it is pointless trying to deny the immediate need to make changes in our legal systems to accommodate for the recent changes in our world. We mustn’t forget that the job of laws is to make sure we can all live in peace, and therefore they should address the immediate threats we are facing as the global community.
