Just One Wish

I was surrounded by darkness. The only sound I could hear was my breaths echoing. But I was calm as a baby in his mother’s arms, like I knew the darkness would not hurt me. After a while, my eyes got used to the dark and I started to look around. Looking for clues that could tell me where I was. There I was lying on the cold and wet floor when suddenly I heard a voice calling my name. It was deep and confident. “Welcome to my cave, this is where all the magic happens.” What magic, I thought to myself, confused. “ I will grant you one big wish, it can be whatever you want.” Said the genie. I couldn’t believe my ears, a wish-granting genie. “ But you need to decide quickly.” I wasn’t going to wish a cliché like infinite wishes. So the first thing that came to my mind was reading minds. It would be a different experience to read the minds of the people around me. “I want to read minds,” I said to the genie. And the rest was black.

When I woke up I was in a subway station, waiting for the subway. I thought that whole genie thing was a dream but when I saw an old woman with heavy bags suddenly a thought appeared in my mind. But it was not my voice, it was a cranky voice filled with exhaustion. It was a shock. So the genie was there and I am a mind reader. Cool! In the subway, a couple was sitting across from me. They looked like the perfect couple. Everyone looked at them with envy in their eyes. But suddenly another thought crossed my mind, “I wish I was home, without him.,” the girl was thinking. And the man was thinking about the other women on the subway. It made me realize nothing is as it seems from the outside.

After the subway, I searched for a coffee shop to stop by. I found a cute little coffee shop on the corner. I ordered and started to wait while sitting at an empty table. Behind me there was a strange-looking man, sitting alone at his table. Not making eye contact with anyone. Then his thoughts swept to my mind. They were horrendous and disgusting. His thoughts flowed to my mind nonstop, it made my head hurt. I should stop him from doing something horrible, I thought to myself. No one else around seemed to be disrupted by this man or his looks. All of a sudden he got up and walked towards the counter. Just as he pulled his knife to stab the woman across him I shouted at him to stop. He turned to me and came near me quickly. I could read his thoughts; he was going to kill me. Just as he brought the knife to my face my vision went black. Then I woke up…
