Is United Nations Really Needed?

In 1945 , right after the second world war disaster, countries formed an alliance to ensure this would never happen again. Today, this old alliance stays, even though it become a very different organization with the passing years. Since then, United Nations formed a lot of sub-organizations to solve modern world problems such as global warming. However, it seems like the organization lost its main purpose, they don’t have the power to prevent wars, or they don’t want to. So, is it really logical that United Nations still exists?

In the 20th and 21st centuries, all of the world observed some cruel scenes like Yugoslavian Civil War, the Afghanistan coup, and Russo-Ukrainian War; and the United Nations could not prevent these cases or used enough force to prevent civilian deaths. For example, in Yugoslavian Civil War, more than a hundred thousand civil died and nearly two million people were forced to leave the country. While these were happening, United Nations failed to send enough forces and they couldn’t prevent a great massacre. Another example, in September 2021, nearly seventy thousand civil died and millions of people were forced to leave their countries by the Taliban dictatorship in the Afghanistan coup. Afghanistan is still under the control of the pro-Islamic terrorist group Taliban. These situations are enough to prove that the United Nations can not achieve its true purpose. It means we need an organization another than United Nations for this problem because they have failed to do their purpose.

Even though they abandoned their purpose of existence, the United Nations now focused on global problems like sustainability, global warming and Carbon Dioxide emission, education, etc. It is also focused on protecting human rights and preventing these rights from getting violated. For example, a sub-organization of the United Nations named OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) is focused on working for preventing casualties caused by extraordinary catastrophic situations like earthquakes, famine, diseases, etc. For example, the civils that lost their houses in the tragic earthquake that affected Syria and Turkey is now provided tents and blankets by OCHA. Also, the United Nations plans to donate one billion dollars to support Turkey. This shows that despite leaving its main purpose, the United Nations still works for human lives and human rights.

To conclude, the United Nations still protects human rights and human lives even though it does have not enough force to prevent any war or conflict. So, its existence still has a purpose even though it focuses on different world issues.
