Glorious History

29th of October, the proclamation of our republic is not just a date that symbolizes our independence as a nation, it is beyond borders and time. It is a precious and remarkable state of our history that sets an example for many nations and leaders. Considering the conditions of a hundred years ago, this sounds like an absolute miracle. However, this is the hard work, foresight, resistance, and determination of a leader and his nation.

After the war was concluded, Atatürk’s main intention was to save his nation from its dark past and ignorance and lead the way to a modern country with independence. It was clear to him that this new republic had a very long way to go and heal its wounds. That is why although the war was finally over, there was a second phase of enlightenment. The aim was to modernize and reach the level of modern civilization as soon as possible. It was necessary to break the chains that held society back and eliminate the obstacles that hindered its progress. It was essential to turn these attempts into a way of living for society. It was possible to implement these by synergistic, cohesive, success-oriented reforms.

The participation of women in social life, especially in the workforce, keeping them equal to men in social and political rights, the modernization of clothing, the closure of lodges and zawiyas, the adoption of the Surname Law, the abolition of some nicknames and titles, the acceptance of international time, calendar, numbers, and units of measurement. These are the main contemporary breakthroughs achieved by the Revolution in the social field.

The establishment of our republic on October 29th is a day that transcends space and time and represents more than simply our country’s freedom. Considering the thorny road our nation had to walk in order to achieve its fullest potential, it is vital to protect and preserve our independence and act in a way that is worthy of our country’s glorious history.
