Dune: Part One Review

I recently watched a film called “Dune: Part One”, directed by Denis Villeneuve. It was a mind-blowing sci-fi film that was the adapted version of Frank Herbert’s novel, Dune.

The story is set on the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the spice melange, which makes the planet invaluable but without a ruler. It follows Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, our main character, a young noble heir destined for the throne, but his family was betrayed by enemies, and sent off to Arrakis, where the main story starts. As Paul meets Chani who is played by Zendaya while trying to hide his identity, learn the planets weird environment and much more.

For me the performances are the film’s most breath-taking part, other than the visual effects, Chalamet brings a meaning to Paul, showing us his both his inner disagreement and growing strength. The other actors such as Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson and Jason Momoa all have a great performance with showing their characters.

And for visual effects, Dune is a masterpiece. The cinematography is stunning, especially capturing the isolation which Arrakis is going through with its breathtaking atmosphere. The special effects, particularly the sandworms and the ornithopter ships, are engaged to the film’s world-building.

Though its story flow can feel slow to some people because the film focuses on the world-development, which I found different from other films, Dune is a beautiful sci-fi experience. I would highly recommend it, especially to fans of complex, visually interesting films with rich storytelling.
