Determining Our Purpose

The poem “O Me! O Life!” was written by Walter Whitman, and it was written from the heart. In his writing, he portrayed himself and his own emotions. Whitman never once imagined that his poem would become a major hit and touch the hearts of millions of people across decades. Whitman had no idea that the words he was writing would have permanent importance. The poem continues to be important now for the same intention motivates and gives us hope. People all throughout the world turn to works like these for motivation and hope.

Whitman begins to question the purpose of his own life and his place in a nearly deserted world. Many people’s lives may be compared to this. Whether it’s to be an artist or a lawyer, we’re all looking for our real purpose. Whitman decides to provide a solution in this poem even though it begins with an indefinitely difficult question in order to deal with his own sense of hopelessness. He takes the chance to remind readers that the point of life is to live rather than letting his regret remain.

Finding our true purpose is the biggest and most significant adventure of our life. Yet so many of us go through life either not truly understanding or responding to a terrible inner voice who gives us false impressions of who we are. So I wish to identify and overcome the problems I personally experience in society, regardless of the era I was born into. I agree wholeheartedly with Whitman’s ideas on defining your purpose statement. Since I’ll learn more about who I really am if I truly find my purpose. When I discover who I truly am, I’ll feel so much better about myself and be luckier, healthier, and more knowledgeable. If I understand my purpose, I’ll have an advantage over others as well since I’ll be aware of the sort of person I am.
