As the technology develops and digital data takes a bigger part in our lives there is a slight risk that we are taking: the mass of digital data. Even though this seems as a really dumb problem in the 23rd century it might be a real risk.
Digital data has a mass of one attogram, which would equal to one quintillionth of a gram. Even though this sounds like a really tiny amount, imagining how much digital data there is and how much there could be in the future, this actually has a potential of being a huge problem in the future.
Some consequences of digital data increasing the Earth’s mass would be the significant increase in gravity. Everything would weigh so much more that bridges would collapse, aircraft wouldn’t work properly, trees would start falling and so much more. Other than those climate change would occur, winter and summer would be so much more harsh, the whole Earth would collapse if the mass changed significantly. But all of these possible scenarios would change according to the amount of change in mass.
Overall, digital data could indeed be a risk for all of us in the long future but for now we don’t have a proper solution or really a problem to start with for now.
Could Digital Data be a Risk?
