Changes in the population of India and China 2000–2050

The line graph shows how the populations of India and China changed from 2000 to 2050. The numbers are in billions.

China had many more people in 2000 about 1.25 billion, while India had 1 billion. Both countries saw their populations grow over the next years, but India’s grew faster compared to China. By 2030, both countries are expected to have the same number of total population. Expected number is around 1.45 billion.

After 2030, India’s population will keep going up reaching almost 1.65 billion by 2050. China’s population however, is expected to start going down after 2030. The number of people will be dropping to about 1.4 billion by 2050.

Currently China has more people, but India will catch up to China around 2030 and it will keep growing. China’s population will get smaller compared to India after it peaks.
