Camp

Camp
I was by myself in the vastness of the forest as twilight created long shadows across the tall trees. I knew I had lost my way back to the campsite, and panic started to flood into my chest. Searching desperately for any familiar landmark, I staggered through the underbrush with just the low glow of the setting sun to guide me.

I realized I had to find somewhere to stay for the night as darkness dropped upon the forest.  I made a crude shelter out of dry leaves and fallen branches against a strong tree trunk. The chilly, unforgiving night air pierced through my clothing and left me feeling bone-chilling.I kindled a tiny fire with a shaking hand, and the flickering flames created unsettling shadows on the trees next to me.  The sound of the fire crackling gave me some feeling of peace, but the sound of rustling leaves and faraway cries from animals that slept made me uneasy.

My mind was constantly racing with images of my buddies who were still at the campsite and were not aware of my situation as I sat close to the fire. I prayed that they would be safe and that at first light, they would send out a search party.

The hours went by painfully slowly, with every minute seeming to last forever. I was afraid of what was in the dark, beyond the reach of my weak fire, and I dared not close my eyes.  There was no sign of morning in the sky, and the night showed up to go on forever.

But soon, as the first rays of sunrise started to appear through the above canopy, I felt a wave of relief. I headed out again, determined to find the trail again, and followed it all the way back to the campsite.

My buddies let out yells of relief and delight as I jumped into the clearing, looking messy and worn.  Their concerned faces became softer by the dawn light as they welcomed me warmly.

I realized that even though the night had been long and terrifying, I had survived it and had a fresh regard for the security and comfort of home as we sat there by the fire’s dropping embers.
