In today’s world, TV series and movies hold a significant place in our daily lifestyle. The twenty-first century is certainly the century of movies and TV series, which leads us, the teenagers, to spend, or you might as well say waste, our time in front of the television watching movies and series. So today, I decided to discuss the pros and cons of teens constantly spending their time watching shows.
I want to start with the negative aspects first. Let’s take a look at the overall titles before we get into heavy detail. The cons, such as a sedentary lifestyle, a bad impact on mental health, escapism, and reality avoidance, and a bad influence on behavior. These four main titles cover the negative aspects of constantly watching television. Now, I want to detail these four topics. The first one I want to talk about is a sedentary lifestyle. Having a sedentary lifestyle can cause health problems such as obesity, eye strain, and poor posture due to sitting for too long. The next one I want to talk about is its bad impact on mental health. Binge-watching TV series for extended periods may lead to decreased productivity, disturbed sleep patterns, and increased feelings of isolation or loneliness.
Another main title which has a connection with these bad impacts on mental health is its bad influence on behavior, which can be influenced by some series that might portray unhealthy behaviors or violence, influencing young viewers’ attitudes and behaviors. The last one is escapism and reality avoidance, which is caused by over-fondness, leading to the avoidance of real-life challenges or emotions, causing teens to seek comfort in fictional worlds rather than the real world.
Now, let’s talk about the positive aspects of movies and TV series. As we did with the negative aspects, let’s take a quick overall look at the main titles, which are entertainment and escapism, cultural and social impact, character development, and relatability. The first one we have is entertainment and escapism. We have seen escapism in the cons as well. TV series serve as a means of relaxation and escapism from the stresses of daily life. They offer a variety of storylines that captivate and engage teens, providing a source for entertainment and emotional engagement.
Another one is its cultural and social impact. I want to merge this with community and social interactions as they are relatively close topics. Many TV series tackle social issues, promoting awareness and creating important conversations among young viewers. Shows that address topics like mental health and diversity contribute to social consciousness and empathy. Also, shared interest in TV series creates communities and forums where individuals can discuss, debate, and connect with like-minded fans. This can lead to meaningful social interactions and friendships. The last but not least is character development and relatability. Well-developed characters in TV series often appeal to young audiences, providing relatable role models or teaching valuable life lessons. Watching characters navigate challenges and grow can inspire personal development and empathy.
To summarize everything we have just talked about, watching movies and series have a lot of positive effects as well as negative effects. But if you are careful with your screen time, how many hours you spend watching these shows, and what kind of shows you are watching, you probably won’t struggle with any of these negative effects, and not only that, you will be affected positively. In the end, watch anything you want, but be sure to double-check the content and the time you spend watching it.
