Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell is currently holding the place of “The Best Novel To Be Ever Written” in my heart, honestly. It is the gateway to a universe which the world is ruled by three super-countries, all fighting for nothing, also being controlled by dictators. This roman is, undeniably, brought a whole new breath, both for novel-writing and the whole branch of critisism.
Our main character, Winston Smith, is an Outer Party member, which is lead by the always-watching dictator, Big Brother, enslaving people’s in every possible way and detail. The Party’s invention, Newspeak, is the attempt to destroy political conflicts and completely eliminate people’s ability to think by reducing the language into smaller and more general levels and disable people’s ability to describe themselves.
The Party is monitoring what every person read, speak, say and do, and threatening with taking them to the dreaded Room 101 as a punishment. They use Room 101 to empty people’s minds and replace it with an”imbued with love for Big Brother” one.
Smith starts keeping a diary of his real thoughts, which is a thoughtcrime. With his secret partner, Julia, he goes on an adventure which he can live like a normal person should live. Eventually, all the actions they took, antagonist thoughts against Big Brother and having an unofficial relationship with opposite gender, lead them to the evaded Room 101, and they get purified after all the crimes they have commited.
A world like Nineteen Eighty-Four is not impossible in today’s world. Complete control of a totalitarian regime is not something we did not see in the past, and monitoring everbody is an action that every major authority take, it is possible because of the digital era we are in. This novel is a warning for us. It highlights the importance of resisting unconrollable power and oppression.
