Should Sanctions Be Applied?

We are leaving at 21st-century right now, but still there is some problems come from 60s and 70s. One of these problems is child labour. If we simply explain this very important and unsolved we need to start with separating the terms child labour and young worker. Although sometimes confused with each other, they are basically two different things. Young worker is a children between age 15 and 18. While Child labour is much more younger kids, simply under age 15.

But age or terms are not enough for explaining this important global problem. For defining this problem, we need to look to the psychological side of this issue. Child labour is something that harms children’s mental and physical development. Child labour is also violation of fundamental human rights. According to international standards, work must not be performed by anyone under the minimum working age, usually 15 or higher if stipulated by national low.

And now the most important thing how to prevent this important problem. Hiring procedures can be a way for prevent child labour. Hiring  procedure needs to contain a process must include a robust age verification mechanism, which, includes  checking, ID documents. For young workers, we can create a non-discriminate but protective workplace. And also we can create a low risk environment for young workers by identifying low risk jobs. Also continuously raising awareness of factory management about young workers and how to create a safe workplace for young workers. Young workers should never be involved in tasks that are included in “hazardous work list” in national law.

Not only private companies but also governments have things to do for example governments should provide a living stipend an enrolling him/her in a suitable educational vocational. Government should help children who suffered from child labor economically as well. In our country and also in the world children needs to work to help family economy. Government needs to support education life of these kids.

Although child labor is against the law it still continues in the world so it is unlikely to deter people by rules alone. We can only prevent this problem as a result of strict rules and strict implementation of these rules. It should not be forgotten that child labor has physical and mental harms that affect even the future lives of children. Employers who employ children just because they have a lower wage without caring about their future should be punished.
