THE NEW YEAR’S EVE MIRACLE

The year was December 2005. As always, I would celebrate it with my closest friends. We used to do something different every year, and this year we had someone new join us, Robby. She was different, at least for me. It seemed to happen between us, but it didn’t. Anyway, this year Neil arranged a big limo for all of us. We would go to a different party every hour with that limo. Robby had plans with someone else that night and he couldn’t come. Neil, Jason, Amelia, and I were there, just like before. We’ve been with them since college. Amelia and Jason have been together for almost 9 years. Just get married already. We made our entrance to the first party around 10:48 pm. I don’t know if I should tell you, but Neil was the most flirtatious among us. He had met someone and that girl had already come between us and would come with us to the other party. Then all of a sudden I was faced with a call, it was Robby calling. I thought why would she call me when she was with her date, but I picked up the phone anyway. She said that her date was out of business and that’s why he couldn’t come to dinner. To be honest, I was happy for myself because I loved Robby. I told him we were going to pick him up and I hung up. But there was something we did not consider: the roads were so full that if we went back we would have missed party number 3, but there was no other choice. We picked her up from Robby’s place and set off for party number 3. But since the time we set off, Amelia has been saying that she has been complaining about her shoes and that it hurts a lot. Then Jason was going to go home and go to buy shoes for Amelia, but it was precarious because the lines were very busy, and almost collapsed, so if Jason went now, it would be difficult for us to reach him. It is even a matter of curiosity whether it could catch up with the new year. Jason went and promised to come. The roads were blocked, it was around 11:18 pm. There were 5 parties in total. We were trying to go to 4, we were going to meet Jason at party number 4. Time was running out, and Amelia was trying to reach Jason. Robby, Neil, me, and Neil’s weird girlfriend were trying to pass the time listening to the playlist we made. Unfortunately, every piece of music we listened to past the time brought us closer to the new year. The lines were down, and we didn’t know where Jason was. Amelia suddenly awkwardly stepped out of the window and started yelling “Jason”. Jason’s arrival was one thing with his shouting. It was a big coincidence, but a nice coincidence. When Jason arrived, he said he had already gone to party number 4 and had a lot of fun – oh well(!) – so we decided to go to party number 5, the last party. There was a lot of queue at the previous party and it was 11.57. We all understood that we wouldn’t be able to catch up anyway, so we celebrated that beautiful moment we were together there. When Robby and I just met, we had an agreement that if neither of us had a date on New Year’s Eve, we would enter the new year together. And seconds before we enter the new year and just then… would you believe it? We were both under the mistletoe.
