Living in the United States of America may look like a teenage dream, but if you take a closer look, it’s far from the truth. Racism, terrorism, poorly controlled border, and last but not least, the dysfunction of the political system. These are only the visible parts of the iceberg. Even though American citizens deal with many things, their suffering is not close to the end.
It was only seconds before the new year. And, just then all the television channels cut off. The government announced that the purge night had started. Nobody knew what to do. The first thing that came to our mind was to leave the country, but our chances of survival were low, and the government had probably closed the doors of airports, hospitals, and police stations, so all we could think about was hiding in the basement. My mum went upstairs to bring some blankets to the basement. Because our basement didn’t have heat insulation it was always cold. And because we were in the middle of the winter, it was not clever to go inside without something to protect us from the cold. While my mom was looking for the blankets, I prepared something to eat. My father was tidying the basement, and my little brother was waiting for us with his teddy bear. When we finished getting ready, we went down to the basement. Even though we had blankets, it was still cold. My little brother was sleeping when we heard a loud banging on the door. After 5 minutes, just when we thought it was over, we heard two men shouting my dad’s name. Everyone was confused except my dad. We were silent for some time, and my dad was the first to speak. He told us that these guys were working for his biggest enemy, so as soon as they realized that the purge night had started, they decided to come after my dad. I had a plan which was too risky. When I first told my parents about it, they didn’t like it. But since it was the only thing we could do, they had no choice but to say yes. I slowly opened the door and told them: “What do you want? My dad is gone, and he is not coming back. Leave us alone with our pain!” with tears falling down. They looked so convinced. After looking at each other, they decided to leave.
I ran downstairs and hugged my family. But the danger was still not over. There were still 9 hours for the purge to finish. Hopefully, nothing happened, and we all survived. The first thing we did after the purge night was to move to a completely different country where there was no purge.
