I was 7 years old when I got to truly recognize the beauty of the stars for the first time. I remember them looking like shiny crystals hanging tightly from an endless ceiling. Some of them would wink at me, whisper to me the tales of different people from all around the world. I fell in love with the way they looked too impossible to be true, the way they were so perfect with the tiniest spark they all had, creating an infinite storybook for all those who know how to read. They were right there, almost a reach ahead. “Maybe when I’m old enough, tall enough one day, I can touch them then.” is what I thought when I saw the stars when I was 7. I’m still 7 years old when I look up at the sky late at night.
Ageless Youth
I was 9 years old when a kitten licked my finger for the first time. It was one of the strays we had living on our street, I was trying to put it and its siblings to sleep by cuddling them and singing lullabies to them. I remember it so clearly, by how the kitten leaned in towards my thumb and gave it a quick lick. I was so amazed at the texture of the kitten’s tongue I never wanted to let it go. I fed them almost every day, asking my parents to buy more and more salami just so I could feed the fluffy babies. I’m still 9 years old when I see a kitten outside.
I was 11 years old when I had to play the therapist for an online friend of mine. I had little experience of what to be done but I was strong when it came to emphatising and putting myself in others shoes objectively. They were not feeling well, they didn’t know how to deal with everything they had on their plate. I reached out a helping hand and did everything I could to stray them away from intrusive thoughts they had. Sadly I never learned how to stop playing the therapist friend until I was 15, which cost me a great deal of happiness in the long term. Perhaps I was 11 years old for 4 years, maybe I am still 11 from time to time.
I was 13 years old when I realized how addicting readings books can get, especially if you have nothing much to do other than books that actually catch your attention. Despite all the projects I was doing in 7th grade, I read tons of books. I even got in trouble once because I was reading too much! It was a misunderstanding of course, but it was so funny. I’m still 13 years old when I open up a book I’m interested in.
