Film Adaptations

Literature and cinema have accompanied the cinema in almost every time since its existence, and this unity, which started with the literary works being the subject of the cinema, has continued until today. Cinema almost become reminder for literature. So much so that today’s literary adaptation films consist of works that most viewers do not know or know as literary works, but have not made time to read. Although the coexistence of literature and cinema is a widely spoken and highly critical one, these two fields have continued to support each other. Even if there are differences of opinion from time to time, this unity has also been beneficial for literature.

With Georges Melies’ Jules Verne’s novel Voyage dans la Lune transfer to the cinema in 1902 long history of the relationship between literature and cinema began but in this movie an uncompleted history of arguments of this relationship started. In the coexistence of cinema and literature, the fact that the cinema does not consider the originality of the literary work while dealing with literary works is undoubtedly one of the most discussed issues. But I think the thing that makes an adapted movie special is not the think it is inspired from it’s the directors’ point of view and how to visualize it in the audience’s mind. They should not try to make a difference or a plot twist. We should not really look for originality in an adopted movie. but that doesn’t mean we should do everything according to the book. Because more adopted movies and more strict scenarios limit the imaginary world of cinema. Also, we cannot ignore the fact that cinemas’ economical contribution to literature. When the effect of these adaptation films precedes the literary work, the audience buys the book with curiosity because of the film when they encounter the book of the film. When viewed, the level of awareness of the literary work increases alongside the film.

Although the visual narrative method of cinema makes use of literary narrative in adaptation films, it gives importance to the cinematic method rather than the originality of the literary work, since it shapes and interprets the literary work in its own perspective. Compared to reading a literary work, today’s individual prefers to watch instead of reading, since the visual feast of the cinema promises shorter and more enjoyable times. However, when it comes to today, cinema, from another perspective, can also be considered as a field that makes literature visible, brings it to the agenda or increases its popularity. However, most of the interviewees are not aware of the work behind the adapted films. In summary, the fact that cinema is the most suitable tool for this age causes it to be a wonderful tool for literature.
