The date was 29 October 1929 and people were very curious about what is going on inside the parliament. Because deputies were both stressed and happy, discussing with each other. There were rumors that there will be a very important announcement. Even though some people thought that it just a normal day with a lot of work the rest did understand that there was something going on. They just didn’t know if it is something they should be stressed about or is there something good going on. It was also the same for deputies because they couldn’t predict if the public will accept republic or not. There were still some people out there who weren’t really happy that Atatürk was the leader.
Later that day they made a public announcement telling people to gather in square. Now public was all stressed out because their thoughts were right, there is really something going on. On the other side Atatürk and the other deputies were trying to prepare the most appropriate speech. If they tell something wrong or anything that can be understood wrong there will be a big crisis which is the last thing they want after all those years with really bad days. After working for hours and waiting for hours it is now time for both the parliament and public to do their job.
All the people were gathered in square waiting for the important announcement stressed out. Little did they know was it was actually something really good. When they saw Atatürk smiling while going to the podium everyone was relieved. After minutes of talking people were cheering because they were all happy that now they are living in a modern country. At first, they were shocked also there were people who even yelled at Atatürk but then everything changed. Public accepted the good. For the rest of the day everyone celebrated the news and were all excited.
Overall, this memory of an old deputy shows us that it was a big change for the country and the world. It took years of effort to gain the public trust and establish the public. After 29 October 1929 the country’s name was Republic of Türkiye. It was now a modern, open-minded and an accepted country by the world. That’s why every year this day is celebrated by the Atatürk’s people in honor of the new Türkiye.
